I watched the documentary on PBS called American Coup. I think it is a bit of history everyone needs to watch. As a matter of fact, it is the stuff that a good movie is made of. If it wasn’t real, you could swear the best fictional writer wrote it.
It sheds light on what really
happened in the nation and the lies told or truths omitted to shade the history
of America.
To my surprise, it seems the News and Observer newspaper played a big part in creating a racial division in the state of North Carolina. Although they "apologized" in 2006 for their part in conjuring the racial divide and civil unrest… a freakin’ coup!!! I wonder if they could do more now to help in the ongoing process of
making things right.. What have they done to "correct" that which they were instrumental in destroying? Readers want to know.
Well,
these are a few things I think might help.
1.
They
could help support Black voices and Black papers in North Carolina that are
still struggling to tell our story and truths of past and present day.
2.
They
could definitely use their platform of doing a better job of correcting lies
and shedding light on what Republicans and conservatives are actually doing in
the state with the same energy they used back in the day to foment hate.
3.
They
could help develop digital platforms and other closed circuit governmental communication
tools in rural areas to help the community stay informed about issues. It’s often not that hard in this day age. With
a video camera, YouTube channel, and some training—people can do big things.
Anyways…
just a thought. They may already be doing some of those things. If so great. If not, they should strongly consider it. Often, companies, industries, and people think just saying “I’m sorry” is
enough to appease those who they have profited off of greatly. No. It
is not. Do better.
